French Days Photo Frames

A frame is chosen by print size before it is chosen by the color of the wood. This selection brings together frames in acacia, bamboo, black pine and rattan, in the two most common photo print dimensions.

Start with the size

Commercial prints most often come in 10x15 and 13x18, the two sizes this selection covers. The small size sits on a shelf or a nightstand without cluttering the surface. The large size is better suited to a portrait and reads from farther away on a wall.

The wood sets the mood

Woven acacia and bamboo lean toward light tones and lighten an already busy wall. The black pine of the Canopy and Haiku models, on the other hand, sets up a sharp contrast around the image. The rattan combined with metal on the Loft model adds texture, best kept for very graphic photographs.

Creating a gallery wall

A successful wall keeps a common thread: the same wood, the same size or the same family of images. Align the frames along a shared edge rather than their center, and keep an even gap from one piece to the next. Lay the composition out on the floor first to judge it before hanging.

Frequently asked questions

Which size should I choose for a standard print?

The 10x15 corresponds to the classic print, the 13x18 to a slight enlargement. Check the dimensions of your photograph, not those of the frame, which include the molding.

Can different woods be mixed?

Yes, as long as you keep a common size from one frame to the next. Two woods are enough: beyond that, the composition loses its coherence.

Where should a frame be placed to protect the photograph?

Away from direct sunlight and direct heat sources. A print in a south-facing spot loses its colors within a few seasons, whatever frame surrounds it.
