Firmness, thickness and motion isolation should be decided before the color of the cover. Our selection brings together hybrid-core mattresses that combine memory foam with pocket springs.
Soft comfort and firm support are not opposites: the top layers cradle the shoulders and hips, while the core keeps the spine aligned. If you sleep on your side, look for a comfort layer that lets the shoulder sink in; on your back, it is the firmness of the core that counts.
Pocket springs work independently of one another. The movements of the person sleeping next to you therefore stay localized and do not travel across the bed. This construction also lets air circulate at the center of the mattress, which limits the feeling of heat in the early morning.
Take the inside measurement of your bed frame before settling on a size. Also consider height: a thick mattress raises the sleeping surface and requires fitted sheets cut for that depth. The exact dimensions of each model are listed on its product page.
Each pocket spring compresses according to the load it bears, which prevents rolling toward the heavier of the two. Choose the firmness that suits the heavier sleeper: a comfort layer that is too soft will sag under their weight.
Above all, it needs a flat, sound support that can bear its weight without sagging in the middle. The final height of the bed increases accordingly, which is noticeable on a bed that is already high.
Air out the bedroom when you wake up and vacuum the surface once a month. A washable mattress protector remains the simplest way to keep the bed clean.
