Textiles change a room without touching the furniture: cushions that come filled, covers that slip over an insert already in place, and throws to dress a sofa, an armchair or a bed.
A complete cushion settles the matter in one go. A cover, on the other hand, goes over an insert you already own and lets you change the mood with the seasons without piling up new volumes. Measure the insert before choosing: an insert slightly larger than the cover gives a well-filled cushion, never limp.
On a three-seater sofa, three or five cushions are enough: a large square, a smaller size, and a rectangular one placed in front. The square structures the line of the backrest, the rectangle truly supports the back. Keep the largest at the ends and the smaller ones toward the center of the seat.
A throw isn't just for covering up: it brings the softest material into the room. Draped at an angle over an armrest, it breaks the straight line of a seat; folded in three at the foot of the bed, it finishes the bedding. A chunky knit warms a smooth fabric, a fine weave calms a velvet.
Two materials that echo each other and one that stands out: for example linen, a knit and velvet. Stay within the same family of tones and let texture make all the difference.
A medium size, set in the corner of the backrest, keeps the seat comfortable and the back supported. Very large squares are made for deep sofas.
Air it out and shake it often, that is the most effective habit. For a stain, a gentle wash and drying flat preserve the shape of the weave.
