Lantern Promotions

A lantern is judged by its height and the size of its opening, since that is where the candle goes in. Ours range from small formats set out in twos or threes to models over sixty centimeters tall, in metal, woven rattan and glass.

Group rather than isolate

A single lantern on a large console looks lost. Bring together two or three of clearly different heights, for example a small format, a medium model and a large one. Offset them slightly instead of lining them up, and keep to the same family of material so the group holds together.

Metal, rattan and glass

Black metal emphasizes lines and pairs well with an understated interior. Woven rattan brings warmth and a softer shadow as soon as the candle is lit. Glass shields the flame from drafts and lets all the light through. Dust rattan with a dry brush, metal with a cloth.

The opening, then the candle

Measure the lantern's opening, then choose a candle one or two centimeters smaller so you can pick it up without burning yourself. A pillar candle fits in the large models; a simple tea light is enough in a small format. A battery-operated candle remains the most worry-free option in a bedroom, near a curtain or on a covered terrace.

Frequently asked questions

What size candle for a lantern?

Measure the opening and subtract one to two centimeters. The candle should go in without rubbing and stay clear of the sides.

Can a lantern stay outdoors?

On a covered terrace, yes, provided you bring it in before the rain and the winter. Glass and metal handle humidity better than rattan, which holds on to it and eventually dulls.

How do I choose between two sizes of the same model?

The large format sets the tone on the floor or near a fireplace; the small one accompanies a tray or a coffee table. The two complement each other side by side.
