Seating is chosen first for the right height, and only then for the right material. This selection brings together dining chairs, small armchairs with armrests, oak and rattan stools, swivel armchairs, and poufs.
A 33 cm stool goes next to the end of a sofa or in a bathroom, whereas a 40 cm model serves as extra seating in a living space. At a dining table, aim for a seat that leaves around thirty centimeters below the tabletop. It is this measurement, not the design of the seat, that determines everyday comfort.
Allow about sixty centimeters of width per guest: that is the difference between a table for dining and a cramped one. Chairs are often bought in pairs, which lets you add a place setting without changing models. A small dining armchair adds armrests, and therefore support, provided they fit under your tabletop.
Oak and rattan make for light seats that are easy to move and wipe clean. Bouclé and velvet warm up a dining room, but call for a vacuum rather than a sponge. Woven fabric remains the most neutral: it moves from the table to the desk without clashing with the rest.
It needs clearance around its pivot, which a set table rarely allows. Keep it for the living room, the study, or a reading nook.
They make long meals more comfortable and take up more width. Check that they fit under your tabletop before choosing.
Vacuum with a brush attachment to remove dust, then dab a fresh stain with a barely damp white cloth, working from the edge toward the center. Let it air dry.
